Calderas

Calderas are large craters that form during or after volcanic eruptions as a result of a collapse into the now empty or depleated magma chamber below. Calderas can form in volcanoes with both felsic or mafic magma compositions. Calderas are distinct from other volcanoes because they form through subsidence, rather than construction.
