Maars are craters formed by explosive eruptions caused by the contact between water and mafic magma chambers. Maar-creating eruptions are generally described best as "steam explosions" rather traditional magma flows/eruptions. Maars are distinct from calderas because rather than bein a collapse feature, they are formed through explosive force.
