Volcanic Necks

Beacon Rock, WA Credit: USNPS

Volcanic necks are an erosional landform created by the total erosion of the outer cone of a volcano. What is left over is just the hardened magma from within the center of the volcano. This magma is both the innermost part of the volcano (last exposed to erosion) and generally made of more erosion resistant material than the outer layers of the volcano.
