Spits

Farewell Spit, New Zealand Credit: NASA

Spits form as longshore currents carry sediments along a headland. As currents slow down, sand falls out of suspension and accumulates at the end of the headland. Eventually, this deposition creates a long, narrow body of sand extending out from the headland, usually curving back towards the headland after it reaches a certain length.
