Fault traces are simply the visible remnants of a fault on Earth's surface. This can take the form of a crack, or a displacement laterally, up or down. Faulting is a result of Earth's crust attempting to enter equilibrium even as various tectonic (or human driven) processes move the ground out of equilibrium.
