Fold & Thrust Belts

Zagros Fold & Thrust Belt, Iran Credit: IUGS

A fold & thrust belt is a massive landform created by the compression of continental plates as a result of convergence/plate collision. Imagine, if you will, a thick, heavy blanket. When you place one hand on the blanket, holding it steady, and then with the other press and move the blanket towards your still hand, the blanket bunches up. It forms a series of lateral troughs and hills. In a fold & thrust belt, the two colliding continental plates are the blanket.
