Cinder Cones

Cinder cones are some of the smallest volcanoes on earth. Cinder cones are characterized by pyroclastic, fragmented eruptions (material called tephra or cinder), often of felsic composition, that don't travel far from their source, leading to the construction of small cone-shaped features. Cinder cones often remain small due to the short duration of their activity. While shield and stratovolcanoes can be active for over a million years, cinder cones only tend to be active for around a year, some up to ten years.
