Shield Volcanoes

Newberry Volcano, OR. Credit: Smithsonian Institution

Shield volcanoes are broad, gently sloped volcanoes characterised by mafic (basaltic) lava flows. Rather than the explosive, violent eruptions of their rhyolitic cousins, lava flows out over the top, cooling slowly and travelling long distances before fully solidifying. This is what gives shield volcanoes their characteristic shape, and massive size.
